Research on Psychology behind Social Masks

In everyday life, we all wear masks.  It’s part of the reality of living that we have different “masks” or personas we project to the public. https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/minority-report/201803/the-masks-we-wear https://www.huffpost.com/entry/5-masks-we-wear-and-why-w_n_7786922 https://www.theodysseyonline.com/social-masks-wear https://steveroseblog.com/2017/09/30/how-we-mask-our-authenticity/ https://psych2go.net/five-ways-drop-social-mask/ https://strathprints.strath.ac.uk/43402/ https://blogs.psychcentral.com/emotionally-sensitive/2012/01/wearing-masks/

Arthur Zmijewski Democracies by Arthur Zmijewski We will take inspiration from Zmijewski's audio and visual piece in our final project. We will make use of projection. Thomas Ruff 'Stoyal' by Thomas Ruff Thomas Ruff is a German photographer who specialises in portraits. We will take inspiration from his work in capturing the images of the people for our final project. I found this video about identity by MoMA which I thought was really interesting.  Andy Warhol, 'Gold Marilyn' How America saw Marilyn Monroe in 1962 This was a representation of how the media and the public saw Marilyn Monroe. Visit to Dublin

Image
We went up to Dublin to ask the public did they know what a social mask was and if they'd share their masks with us.  We first tried Grafton Street but we found it was too hectic and people were in a rush and just trying to go about their day. We decided to try St. Stephen's green as it would less hectic and the people there would be relaxing and going for a stroll and we figured people would be more likely to speak with us. Grafton Street We found that our theory was right, people were much more open to talk to us. We decided that we would open with "Are you in a rush?" So it meant people had the option to not talk to us if they just wanted to enjoy their walk or chat with their friends/family.  St. Stephen's Green Gate Most people we asked said yes and we explained what a social mask was and asked them to fill out their's on a paper mask we made.  Some people were more open than others. Final Idea

Image
The time came where we had to finalise our idea, we done a bit more experimentation with how we were going to present this project. We created different masks to decide which was appropriate, we made a paper mâché mask, a cardboard one, a black one and a white one. From this we decided that none of these were going to work for us but another idea stemmed from this. We decided that we were going to invest in proper masks to achieve a more professional look, and instead of just writing peoples social masks on the outside of the face, we were also going to get candidates to write on the inside of the mask emotions that they really feel and wish to hide behind the mask. Papier Mâché mask Paper Masks Cardboard Mask White Cardboard Mask Black Cardboard Mask                 We also finalised how we want these masks and the whole project to be presented, we want to get a room dedicated to the project. We decided that with the ...

Rapid Prototyping

Image
Today, we were asked to develop our prototypes further. We have decided to develop our website further and make it so that it better reflects our project goal. For colour schemes for the website I looked at the below colour wheel about emotions to decide on what colours to use in the website.  We're developing our website in such a way that it appears more professional and suits our chosen theme better too. Our website will display our documentary  series which, will contain a series of interviews. Our interviews will be more complex than before because after receiving feedback on our project, we decided that this would be the best course to take. Our website will be easy to navigate through and will be simplistic in style but in keeping with our chosen theme and concept.  Four our series of interviews we will also be conducting an introduction scene to the interview video. This introduction scene will display a collage of current students faces which, we feel wil...

Week 07

Back to  original idea 21/11/2018 So after we all slept on our idea change, we realised that it wasn't a topic that we were all really excited about. So we have decided to go back to our original idea, but add a slight change to it. We are still using the same tag line 'You don't know the half of it', but we want to relate it more to 'Social Masks' and go more in depth into this topic. We will be using the information we have already gathered but also looking more into the idea of Social Masks.
